What Do You Study On A Friday Night?
/What are you a student of?
If you've ever felt like the same situations appear in your life, I want you to pause and ask yourself the question
What am I a student of?
Do you remember when you were in elementary or primary school and you knew your teacher by their last name? Your teacher was the man or woman who would call you by name every so often after you spent time reviewing the material they presented.
One of my favorite teachers growing up had the coolest last name (of course it was an animal). She was amazing at finding ways to engage all of her students and I'm sure my classmates would say they all felt like they were her special student.
Anytime she would call on me I was prepared to answer whatever question was asked and even at a young age my understanding of the material was sound.
So even as a child we have the ability to study information and respond to that information in a likewise manner.
As adults we tend to lose track of that principle and my heart tells me it's because we lose focus on our-self, our-power and our-responsibility.
Earlier today I was scrolling through my social media feed (I make a deliberate habit of avoiding negativity and drama whenever possible) and for some reason when I was scrolling I had discovered something new that I want to share with you.
It finally hit me that we (myself included) never stop learning while we are alive.
So you could say, we're all still students, much like we were in elementary school all those years ago.
What I discovered is that so many of us continue to study the same negative, confrontational material on a daily basis. I would go further and say that some of us have mastered these subjects. Some of us are able to apply negativity to any situation that we encounter, amplify the confrontations in small misunderstanding without even questioning the impact. What's worse is some of us do it all the time!
Now these are the same people who wonder why they're always caught in a negative pattern or that bad things always happen to them - and I believe it's because they are studying this all the time.
If you frame it up this way, doesn't the reason seem obvious that you'll be caught in a negative, confrontational life cycle because it's what you've trained yourself to do through a daily education.
I want to give an example on the other end of the spectrum to paint a different picture, a friend of mine wanted to be a doctor. He had desire to help people was the most powerful thing in his life. So for 8 years his daily ritual involved him doing the following for hours on end - wake, eat, study, review, test, class, nap, eat, study, review test, sleep, repeat.
Do you know what he studied everyday for 8 years? Science and medical material
Do you know what he became after 8 years of doing this daily? A doctor.
Do you know what he was surrounded by after 8 years? Doctors
Do you know what people call him after 8 years. A doctor
Do you know what his life reflects? A doctor's
I'll say it again. We are all students.
Some of us, like my friend are more deliberate and conscious of what they're studying. And some of us, not so much.
Everyone doesn't have to be a doctor. However everyone of us has to realize we're a student. And if we're not getting the results we desire we must ask ourselves this very important questions...right now....then take action.
